In 1957 Atlanta has taken the first jet aircraft: Sud Aviation Caravelle from Washington, and in the same year was built the new terminal, which managed to reduce the congestion of passengers. Atlanta was the most busy airport in the country with a passenger more than two million passengers a year, and eventually became the world's most busy airport.
May 3, 1961 opened a new terminal worth 21 million dollars, the largest in the country, he was able to take more than six million passengers a year. The new airport has been overwhelmed in the first year, when 9.5 million people took. In 1967, the Atlanta authorities and airlines have begun work on a master plan the future development of Atlanta Municipal Airport.
Construction was started in the middle of the existing terminal in January 1977 under the administration of Mayor Maynard Jackson. It was the largest building construction project in the southern U.S. states, the cost was 500 million U.S. named after former Atlanta mayor William Berry Hartsfield, who did a lot for the development of air transportation, International Airport of Atlanta William B. Hartsfield was opened September 21, 1980 time and within the allocated budget. It was designed to service up to 55 million passengers a year and won the 230 000 square meters. In December 1984, it completed construction of the fourth parallel runway, and another runway was extended to 3.6 km in the next year.
In May 2001, construction began on the fifth runway length of 2 700 m (10-28). Its construction was completed 27 May 2006, and was the first runway, which was built after 1984. It passes through the bridge over Highway 285 in the southern part of the airport. The construction of residential buildings were destroyed and the cemetery. New runway takes aircraft of medium and small size, which allows to unload long runways to receive large aircraft such as Boeing 777. After the opening of the fifth runway Hartsfield-Jackson has become one of the few airports capable of landing three aircraft simultaneously. The fifth runway has increased the possibility of the airport to receive the aircraft by 40%, from an average of 184 flights per hour to 237.
